So go ahead and indulge your taste buds, and discover Stockholm, travel like a local!

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is a city that beautifully blends the old with the new, offering a rich history, stunning architecture, and a vibrant modern culture. As a savvy traveller, you’ll want to experience the city like a local, avoiding the common tourist traps and discovering the hidden gems. Here’s a three-day itinerary that will help you make the most of your time in Stockholm

Day 1: Embracing the Historical Heartbeat of Stockholm

Morning: Gamla Stan (Old Town)

Begin your journey in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, where cobblestone streets and medieval buildings tell tales of centuries past. Start with a visit to Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm, surrounded by colourful buildings and home to the Nobel Museum. Wander through narrow alleys like Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, the narrowest street in the city, and explore the majestic Stockholm Cathedral.

Lunch: Café Schweizer

For a local dining experience, head to Café Schweizer. This charming café offers a variety of traditional Swedish dishes, including meatballs with lingonberries and gravlax. It’s a perfect spot to relax and refuel before continuing your exploration.

Afternoon: Royal Palace and Riddarholmen

Visit the Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in Europe. Don’t miss the Royal Armoury and the Tre Kronor Museum, which delve into Sweden’s regal history. Afterward, take a short walk to Riddarholmen, an island just west of Gamla Stan, where you can admire the stunning Riddarholmen Church, the burial site of Swedish monarchs.

Evening: Södermalm and Mosebacke

Cross over to Södermalm, a trendy district known for its vibrant cultural scene. Mosebacke, with its outdoor terrace, offers stunning views of the city and is a popular spot among locals. Enjoy a drink at Södra Teatern while soaking in the panoramic skyline.

Day 2: Modern Marvels and Culinary Delights

Morning: Djurgården and the Vasa Museum

Start your day on Djurgården, an island home to some of Stockholm’s most famous attractions. Visit the Vasa Museum to see the well-preserved 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage. This museum is a favourite among locals and provides a fascinating glimpse into maritime history.

Lunch: Rosendals Trädgård

For lunch, head to Rosendals Trädgård, an organic garden café located in the heart of Djurgården. Enjoy freshly made dishes using ingredients straight from their gardens. It’s a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Afternoon: Skansen Open-Air Museum

Next, explore Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Here, you’ll find historic buildings, traditional Swedish crafts, and even a zoo with native Scandinavian animals. It’s a perfect place to understand Swedish culture and heritage.

Evening: Östermalm Market Hall

Head to the Östermalm Market Hall for dinner. This historic food hall offers a wide variety of fresh seafood, meats, cheeses, and other local delicacies. Try the classic Toast Skagen, a creamy shrimp salad served on toast, or indulge in some Swedish cheeses.

Day 3: Hidden Gems and Local Life

Morning: Haga Park and Butterfly House

Start your final day with a visit to Haga Parken, a vast green space that locals love for walking, picnicking, and enjoying nature. Within the park, you’ll find the Haga Palace and the enchanting Butterfly House, a tropical oasis filled with butterflies and exotic plants.

Lunch: Café Pascal

For a cosy lunch, visit Café Pascal in Vasastan. Known for its excellent coffee and delicious pastries, this café is a favourite among Stockholmers. Try a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) or a hearty sandwich.

Afternoon: Monteliusvägen and Fotografiska

Take a leisurely stroll along Monteliusvägen on Södermalm for breathtaking views of Lake Mälaren and the city skyline. Then, visit Fotografiska, Stockholm’s contemporary photography museum, which showcases cutting-edge exhibitions and offers a fantastic café with views over the water.

Evening: Dinner at Oaxen Slip

End your Stockholm adventure with dinner at Oaxen Slip, a bistro located on Djurgården. This Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant serves modern Nordic cuisine in a relaxed setting. Enjoy dishes like herring or Swedish pork while reflecting on your local experiences.

What to Stay Clear Of

Avoid the overly commercialised Drottninggatan, a crowded shopping street that lacks the charm of Stockholm’s more unique neighbourhoods. Skip the ABBA Museum unless you’re a die-hard fan, as it can be quite touristy. Lastly, steer clear of the Hop-On Hop-Off buses; instead, use the efficient public transport system or explore on foot.

Gamla Stan is a treat, but Västerlånggatan has a lot of tourist shops, which is unfortunate. It’s still worth a wander but it has been overly commercialised.

Common Tourist Traps

Beware of overpriced restaurants in the central tourist areas, particularly around Sergels Torg and Norrmalm. These places often serve mediocre food at inflated prices. Same goes for several places in Gamla Stan. Stick to local recommendations for the best culinary experiences.

My Relationship with Stockholm

During my three-year stint in Stockholm with my Swedish girlfriend, I had some incredible experiences. Despite the initial culture shock, I eventually settled into the rhythm of Swedish life and began to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the archipelago of islands surrounding the city.

Start of the Curious Worldview

One of the highlights of my time in Stockholm was creating and hosting my podcast, “The Curious Worldview,” where I interviewed many interesting people. Being in Sweden gave me the unique opportunity to interview a large number of fascinating Swedes, including Mikael Syding, Martin Schibbe, Diamant Salihu, and many more.

I was thrilled to be able to showcase the diverse perspectives and experiences of these amazing individuals to a wider audience. My podcast became a platform for exploring new ideas and discussing topics that I was passionate about. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience, and one that I will always cherish.

Some challenges

Of course, living in Stockholm was not without its challenges. The high cost of living was a constant struggle, and I had to adjust to a simpler lifestyle. However, I found that the slower pace of life was ultimately quite refreshing and allowed me to focus more on my personal growth and the relationships that mattered most to me.

But there will always be a part of my that I consider a Stockholmer.
