Life can be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards – Soren Kierkegaard
How many of the major things in your life, your job, your location, your relationships were determined by pure chance, they happened out of the blue, rather than intent and planning.
It is natural for us to think that life progresses in a linear fashion – a continual, marginal and predictable movement to the right – but this is just us mapping out our future based on the finite experiences of our past. To broaden your horizons beyond that which you have directly experienced is an entirely unnatural thing to do.
How can we predict a future of infinite possibilities based on a finite experience of the past? The future that lays at your feet right now can take any number of an infinite amount of divergent paths. Realising this infinite possibility is everything.
An unpredictable future is both exciting as well as daunting, however an altogether inescapable fact. There is too much beyond our control. And so you can choose to either continue to ride down the river of randomness, being pulled back and forth according to the current, or you can instead invite serendipity into your life and introduce an infinite amount of divergent paths – the paths will still be entirely random and largely unpredictable, but they will at least increase the likelihood of bliss and also return some agency to your direction.
Along the lines of Taleb’s fooled by randomness metaphor – we all cross the busy street every day – and although some fools will occasionally make it to the other side, blindfolded to the world while others who meticulously path their way will still be wiped out – noticing the serendipity, noticing the infinite potential of divergent paths, at least this returns to you the liberty of control and hopefully, if your lucky, an exposure to serendipity can change your life precisely the way you dreamt it would.
